Naturally white teeth are not only attractive but also seen as healthy and clean. But if you have teeth that are not as white as they are supposed to be, you might want to consider teeth whitening treatment.
Teeth whitening is an in-demand procedure in cosmetic dentistry. As the name implies, the treatment whitens teeth that have discolored due to one of many reasons. At Edgewater Dental, we provide expert teeth whitening treatments at our office that would brighten your teeth, enhance your appearance, and boost your confidence.
Here are some reasons why teeth get discolored:
First, the dentist will thoroughly examine the teeth and gums. This is to see if a whitening treatment is safe and appropriate for you. If you have other dental issues like cavities, the dentist may opt to treat those first.
If you are ready for whitening, they will then thoroughly clean and dry your teeth. Then, measures will be taken to ensure that your gums and other oral tissues will not come into contact with the whitening gel. These measures may include a rubber dental dam or a protective solution that will be applied to the gums.
Then, the whitening gel will be applied and allowed to settle for around 15 minutes. This gel contains a potent amount of hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent that releases oxygen molecules into the pores of the teeth’s surface. These molecules dislodge the stains from the pores, whitening the teeth as they used to be. If needed, a special light would be used to activate the gel’s bleaching effect. This process would be repeated until the desired whiteness is reached.
The whitened teeth will initially feel sensitive, but this won’t last long. You will be advised to practice good oral hygiene, brushing and flossing regularly. You would also need to avoid staining food and drinks, especially immediately after the treatment. Smoking and tobacco use will also need to stop.
